You may find this glossary useful...

For those new to the whole fabulous crochet world, we thought it would useful to have this glossary of abbreviations to work with. Many of these are used in standard patterns available for purchase.

Here we go! You’ll come across two different crochet ‘languages’ – Aussie and US

The key differences are:

US sc = Aussie dc

US dc = Aussie tr


Australian Crochet pattern abbreviations US Crochet pattern abbreviations

alt. = alternative

beg.= beginning

C = colour

CC = contrast colour

Cont = continue

Ch or ch. = chain

cm = centimetres

dec = decrease

dbl tr = double treble

dc = double crochet

foll = following

gr/s = group/groups

hlf tr = half treble

inc = increase

lp/s = loop/loops

MC = main colour

Meas = measure

mm = millimetre

patt = pattern

R = row

rep = repeat

rem = remaining

rnd = round

RS = right side

Sep = separate

Slst = slip stitch

St/s = stitch/stitches

Sp/s = space/spaces

tog= together

toh = thread over hook

tr = treble

ws = wrong side

yon = yarn over needle


[ ] work instructions within brackets as many times as directed
() work instructions within parentheses as many times as directed
*repeat the instructions following the single asterisk as directed
**repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed or repeat from a given set of instructions
alt = alternate
BL = Back loop
Bo = Bobble
BPDC= back post double crochet
BPSC= back post single crochet
BPTC= back post treble crochet
CA = colour a
C1= colour 1
CC= contrasting colour
Ch= Chain stitch
Ch- = referring to chain or space previously made
ch-sp = chain space
CL = cluster
cont =continue
DC= Double Crochet
DCTG= double crochet 2 stitches together
dec= decrease
DTR= double treble
Fl=front loop
Foll= Follow
Fp = front post
FPDC= front post double crochet
FPSC = front post single crochet
FPTR= front post treble crochet
HDC= half double crochet
Inc= increase
LP = loops
MC= main colour
p = picot
Pat/patts = Pattern
pc = popcorn
pm = place marker
Prev= previous
rem= remaining
rep = repeat
rnd = round
RS= Right side
Sc= Single crochet
SC2TOG = single crochet 2 stitches together
Sk = Skip
st st = slip stitch
sp = space
st =stitches
tch =turning chain
tog = together
tr = treble crochet
tr tr=triple treble crochet
WS = wrong side
Yo = yarn over
YOH = yarn over hook
