Fiskars tools - we’ve always loved crafting with them, but only recently came across the amazing story behind the brand. Here it is in brief for all of you who were drawn in by the quality and beautiful “orangeness” of the craft products without knowing more about the incredible history of Fiskars.

Fiskars is one of the oldest brands in the world. It began as an ironworks in the small leafy village of – you guessed it- Fiskars, Finland in 1649. Over the centuries, Fiskars manufactured a wide variety of consumer and industrial products including steam engines, plows and cutlery. However, by 1992 factory production had ceased and Fiskars was fading away into history.

That’s when something remarkable happened.

The town and company of Fiskars sought out artisans and designers and invited them all to live and work in the gorgeous historic village. Many jumped at the opportunity to live in the creative hub on the edge of the forest. They brought vitality, colour and transformed it into a much acclaimed centre for Finnish art and design.

Fiskars Orange® has become an important part of the Fiskars identity – almost accidentally! Aren’t all good ideas like that? Here’s the story: when Fiskars iconic scissors were designed in 1967, the prototype handle was created using orange resin left over in a molding machine used to make orange juicers. The final decision on the colour was decided by a vote. Orange won over black by nine votes to seven. At the beginning of 2006, the number of orange-handle scissors sold since then surpassed 870 million!
