When selecting a pattern size for your body, always look at the bust, waist and hip measurements listed on the back of the pattern. If you are like most people, your size won’t be an exact match.

To optimise the fit, consider the garment type to avoid making too many alterations down the track.

Here’s a table to help:

Type of Garment Key Measurement for Pattern Selection
Dress, shirt, coordinated separates Bust
Suits, coats, jackets Bust
Skirts, pants, overalls, shorts Waist. But, take care if your hips are two sizes larger than your waist or you are making pull on pants with an elasticised waist Hips.

A couple of questions and answers for sewers to consider:

Q: What if I fall between sizes?

A: Choose the smaller size if you are wanting a closer fit or using a knit fabric. Choose the larger size if you want a looser fit or are using a woven fabric.

Q. Why do you recommend buying most patterns by the bust size?

A. Sewing should be easy. Adjustments are much easier to make in the waist and hip areas than in the upper body areas.

The most important thing is stopping at
least twice as you sew and trying the
garment on. The best time for the first
fitting is just after the major garment
seams have been sewing.

Your final fit should be to check the
length of the garment before it’s
hemmed.

When trying on, your shoes and
underwear should always mirror what
you intend to wear to ensure accurate
alterations.
