This measurements of the pattern will fit the average 8 year old.You will need to refer to the templates in the printable version of this project to use as a pattern.
1. Using the lightweight interfacing or tracing paper draw out your pattern for the front/back and sleeves
according to the measurements shown. This pattern fits a size 8. You will need to enlarge or decrease the
measurements according to size. Cut out two of the front/back pieces (one for the front, one for the back),
cut two sleeve pieces and one pocket. With the right sides of the fabric facing, pin the top section of the
sleeves to the corresponding piece of the front and back.
2. Sew from the neckline to the under arm on each of the four sides. Fold the smock so there is a front
and back and sew from the wrist, around under the arm and down to the hem. Neaten the seams by
overlocking if desired.
3. Make sleeve casing by folding over 1cm then again 1.5cm pin & stitch leaving a 2cm opening for
insertion of elastic. Place the safety pin onto the end of a 50cm length of elastic and thread it through the
neck casing and 15cm of elastic through each sleeve casing. Sew the ends of the elastic together and stitch
these openings closed.
4. Hem around the bottom by folding over 1cm then again 2cm or length desired. Fold all four sides of the
pocket over 1cm then across the top another 1.5cm. Place the fusible webbing to the pieces of fabric to
be used as appliquè, cut out and attach to pocket as per manufacturer’s instructions, cut out balloons in
the same manner and attach to the front of the smock. Sew around all sides of the appliquéd pieces. Pin
the pocket into position and sew around the two sides and the bottom.
