This project was submitted by Lorna Magen from Sydney Care and knitted by Renee Glass. The elderly often suffer from bad circulation, cold or swollen feet, but conventional slippers are not always practical or affordable. With the help of Sydney Care, Renee plans to distribute Slippers with Soul to the elderly, the disabled and long-term hospital patients. She suggests that this could be a great school project as the pattern is simple enough for beginners.

They aim for 2 million pair of slippers to be done, making it an ongoing project and sending a message of love to the elderly and those in the community in need. Cast on 5 sts. Knit 6 rows. Inc in 2nd st of each row until you have 22 sts on the needle. Next row: Inc in each stitch across row. (44sts) Knit 2, purl 2 across every row for 15cms (6 inches). Next row: knit 2 tog across the row (22sts). Then decrease in 2nd st at beginning of every row until there are 5 sts left on the needle. Knit 6 rows. Cast off, fold in half and sew the rib sides together as well as the 5 sts on top together to form a strap. |
