DIFFICULTY 

 

NEEDLES:

A pair of 5.50mm knitting needles.

Wool needle for sewing up.

 

TENSION:

17 sts and 21 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 5.50mm needles.

 

RIGHT MITTEN

Using 5.50mm needles and MC, cast on 25 (33-35) sts.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.

2nd row: K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.

Last 2 rows form rib.

Work a further 8 (10-10) rows rib and inc one st in centre of last row … 26 (34-36) sts.

Work 2 rows stocking st. **

 

Shape Thumb:

1st row: K13 (17-18), inc in each of next 2 sts, knit to end.

2nd and alt rows: Purl.

3rd row: K13 (17-18), inc in next st, K2, inc in next st, knit to end.

5th row: K13 (17-18), inc in next st, K4, inc in next st, knit to end.

Cont inc 2 sts in this way in every alt row until there are 38 (46-52) sts.

Work 3 rows.

 

Divide For Thumb:

1st row: K25 (31-35), turn.

*** 2nd row: P9 (13-15), turn.

3rd row: Cast on one st, K10 (14-16).

4th row: P10 (14-16).

Work 6 (10-12) rows stocking st on these 10 (14-16) sts.

Next row: [K2tog] 5 (7-8) times.

Break yarn, thread through rem sts, draw up and fasten off.

Using a flat seam, join seam.

With right side of work facing, pick up one st from cast on st at base of Thumb then knit to end … 30 (34-38) sts.

Work 7 rows stocking st, beg with a purl row.

Using C1 for rem, cont in stocking st until work measures 20 (24-27) cm (or 3cm less than length required) from beg, ending with a purl row.

 

Shape Top:

1st row: K1, [sl 1, K1, psso, K10 (12-14), K2tog] twice, K1.

2nd row: Purl.

3rd row: K1, [sl 1, K1, psso, K8 (10-12), K2tog] twice, K1.

4th row: Purl.

5th row: K1, [sl 1, K1, psso, K6 (8-10), K2tog] twice, K1.

6th row: Purl.

Cast off.

 

LEFT MITTEN

Work as for Right Mitten to **.

 

Shape Thumb:

1st row: K10 (14-15), inc in each of next 2 sts, knit to end.

2nd and alt rows: Purl.

3rd row: K10 (14-15), inc in next st, K2, inc in next st, knit to end.

5th row: K10 (14-15), inc in next st, K4, inc in next st, knit to end.

Cont inc 2 sts in this way in every alt row until there are 38 (46-52) sts.

Work 3 rows.

 

Divide for Thumb:

1st row: K22 (28-32), turn.

Work as for Right Mitten from *** to end, noting to use C2 instead of C1.

 

FINISHING

Using a flat seam, join seams. Sew in all ends.
