 3 x Easy Knit 12 PLY 100g balls  1 pair each 5mm and 5.5mm knitting needles, a set of 5mm double-pointed knitting needles or size needed to give correct tension  2 stitch-holders  wool needle for sewing in ends  pom pom maker or piece of cardboard



Using 5.5mm needles and C1, cast on 3 sts. Work in garter st (every row knit) until tie measures 20cm from beg.

SHAPE FOR EAR FLAP – Next row (right side) – Inc in first st, knit to last st, inc in last st … 5 sts. Knit 3 rows. Rep last 4 rows 3 times … 11 sts. Knit 2 rows. Next row – Inc in first st, knit to last st, inc in last st … 13 sts. Knit 5 rows. Adult size only – Next row – Inc in first st, knit to last st, inc in last st ... 15 sts. Knit 3 rows. Both sizes … 13 (15) sts. Break off yarn. Leave sts on a stitch-holder.

HAT- With right side of ear flaps facing, proceed as folls – Using 5.5mm needles and C1, cast on 11 (12) sts, turn, knit across sts from one ear flap, turn, cast on 32 (34) sts, turn, knit across sts from other ear flap, turn, cast on 11 (12) sts, turn … 80 (88) sts.

NOTE – Remainder of Hat is worked in rounds, not rows. Slip all sts onto set of 5.5mm doublepointed needles and divide as evenly as possible between 3 needles. Join to work in rounds taking care not to twist cast-on edge.

BEG BAND – 1st round – Purl. 2nd round – Knit. Rep last 2 rounds 3 times … 8 rounds band in all. Change to C2. Work in stocking st (every round knit) until Hat measures 9 (10) cm from beg (excluding ear flaps). ** Change to C1 for rem. Work 5 (7) rounds.

SHAPE CROWN – 1st round – * K2tog, K8 (9), rep from * to end … 72 (80) sts. 2nd round – Knit. 3rd round – * K2tog, K7 (8), rep from * to end … 64 (72) sts. 4th round – Knit. 5th round – * K2tog, K6 (7), rep from * to end … 56 (64) sts. Cont dec in this manner (knitting one st less between dec each time) in every foll alt round until 16 sts rem. Next round – * K2tog, rep from * to end … 8 sts. Break off yarn, thread end through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.

TO MAKE UP DO NOT PRESS. Using C1 and C2 held together and large pom pom maker or 2 circles of cardboard 10cm in diameter with 4cm centre hole, make a pom pom and attach securely to crown.


Work as for 2 Colour Team, using C3 in place of C1 from ** to end.

TO MAKE UP Make and attach pom pom as for 2 Colour Team Hat, using C1, C2 and C3.

TENSION- 17 sts and 23 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 5.5mm needles. To work a tension square, using 5.5mm needles, cast on 25 sts. Work 34 rows stocking st. Cast off loosely. Check your tension carefully. If less sts to 10cm use smaller needles, if more sts use larger needles.
