Use only the yarn specified. Other yarns are likely to produce different results. Quantities are approximate as they can vary between knitters. Check all yarn of the same colour is from the same dye lot.

NEEDLES AND EXTRAS

  • 1 pair 5.5mm (UK 5) knitting needles or size needed to give correct tension.
  • wool needle for sewing seams.

TENSION

Square measures 14cm wide and 14cm long, using 5.5mm needles. Check your tension carefully. If square measures more than 14cm use smaller needles, if less use larger needles.

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS

kyk = (K1, yfwd, K1) all into next st … 3 sts. sl 2, K1, p2sso = Slip 2 sts together knitways, K1, then pass both slipped sts over the knitted st.

SQUARE (MAKE 54)

Using 5.5mm needles and Blue, cast on 22 sts. Work 41 rows garter stitch (every row knit, first row is wrong side). Cast off loosely, leaving a 20cm end for sewing up.

UNION JACK

LONG BAR OF ST. GEORGE’S CROSS (MAKE 2)

Using 5.5mm needles and Red, cast on 15 sts. Work 113 rows garter st (first row is wrong side).

Beg Centre – ** 1st row – K2tog, knit to last 2 sts, sl 1, K1, psso … 13 sts. Dec one st (as before) at each end of every foll alt row until 3 sts rem. Work 1 row. Next row – K3tog. Fasten off, leaving a 15cm end for sewing up. **

SHORT BAR OF ST. GEORGE’S CROSS (MAKE 2)

Using 5.5mm needles and Red, cast on 15 sts. Work 51 rows garter st.

Beg Centre – Complete as for Long Bar from ** to **. Note – We recommend using mattress stitch to sew up your flag.

Using long ends, join diagonal edges of Short and Long bars together following assembly diagram to form cross.

EDGING - UPPER LEFT AND LOWER RIGHT CORNERS

With right side of cross facing, using 5.5mm needles and White, knit up 27 sts evenly along side of Short Bar, then knit up 58 sts evenly along side of Long Bar … 85 sts. Knit 1 row.

Beg Shaping – 1st row – K25, sl 1, K1, psso, K2tog, knit to end … 83 sts. 2nd and foll alt rows – Knit. 3rd row – K24, sl 1, K1, psso, K2tog, knit to end … 81 sts. 5th row – K23, sl 1, K1, psso, K2tog, knit to end … 79 sts. 6th row – As 2nd row.

Cast off loosely.

EDGING - LOWER LEFT AND UPPER RIGHT CORNERS

With right side of cross facing, using 5.5mm needles and White, knit up 58 sts evenly along side of Long Bar, then knit up 27 sts evenly along side of Short Bar … 85 sts. Knit 1 row.

TO MAKE UP

Following flag assembly diagram, join squares, alternating direction of garter ridges, and then sew to Union Jack. Sew stars in position, using ends from casting on to create a long stitch at each point before sewing in ends.
