Right cross = CR 
Left cross = CL 
6CR: Slip 3 sts to cn at back of work, k the next 3 sts, then k the 3 sts from cn. 
6CL: Slip 3 sts to cn in front of work, k the next 3 sts, then k the 3 sts from cn. 

 

STITCHES USED
GARTER ST (G.ST), using 3.0 mm needles. 
LACE ST, using 3.0 mm needles. Worked over a number of sts divisible by 8 + 5.
Row 1 (RS): knit.

Row 2 & every alt row: purl. 
Row 3: k2, yo, k2tog, * k6, yo, k2tog *, rep from * to *, ending with k1. 
Rows 5 & 7: knit.

Row 9: * k6, yo, k2tog *, rep from * to *, ending with k5.

Rows 11 & 13: knit. Rep Rows 3-14.

TENSION/GAUGE
To achieve a good result it is essential to make a tension square (see Check Your Tension instruction at beginning of book).
26 sts & 34 rows over Lace st using 3.0 mm needles = 10 cm (4 in) square.

 

TO MAKE

BACK:
CO 77-85-93-101-109 sts. Work 6 rows in G.st (every row knit). 
Cont in Lace st as instructed until work measures 4 cm (11⁄2 in) [16 rows] total, cont as foll:
Attention: Each yo will be compensated with k2tog. When the 1st or last st is a yo, replace this with k1.
Next row (dec): k1, k2tog, patt to last 3 sts, sl 1, k1, psso, k1. 
Rep the dec row on every 8th-10th-10th-10th- 10th row 6-3-6-4-10 times, then on every 0-8th- 8th-8th-0 row 0-4-2-6-0 times. 
Cont on the rem 63-69-75-79-87 sts until work measures 21-25-29-33-37 cm (81⁄2-93⁄4-111⁄2-13- 141⁄2 in) [74-88-102-114-128 rows] total.

Top Back Border:
Work 5 rows in G.st, then cast off all the sts knit- wise on the WS of work.

 

FRONT:
Start the same as for Back, working the decreases until 63-69-75-79-87 sts rem. Cont in patt until work measures 21-25-29-33-37 cm (81⁄2-93⁄4-111⁄2- 13-141⁄2 in) [74-88-102-114-128 rows] total.

Armholes:
Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then cast off 2 sts at beg of foll 2-2-2-2-4 rows. (53-59-65-69- 73 sts rem).
Next row (dec): k1, k2tog, patt to last 3 sts, sl 1, k1, psso, k1.
Rep the dec row on every alt row 4 times.
Cont on the rem 43-49-55-59-63 sts until work measures 28-33-37-42-47 cm (11-13-141⁄2-161⁄2- 181⁄2 in) [98-116-130-146-162 rows] total.

Neck:

Next row (RS):
Patt 16-18-19-20-21 sts, cast off the central 11-13-17-19-21 sts, patt to end. Each side will now be completed separately.

Next row (WS): work to central cast off sts and put rem sts on a holder.
Cast off at neck edge on next and every foll alt row 3 sts once, 2 sts once, 1 st once, then cast off 1 st at neck edge on every foll 4th row twice.

Straps:
Cont on the rem 8-10-11-12-13 sts until work measures 18.5-19-20.5-21-21.5 cm (71⁄4-71⁄2-8- 81⁄4-81⁄2 in) [40-44-48-42-54 rows] from the start of the neck, cast off all the sts.
With WS facing rejoin yarn to rem sts.
Cast off at neck edge on next and every foll WS row 3 sts once, 2 sts once, 1 st once, then cast off 1 st at neck edge on every foll 4th row twice.
Cont on the rem 8-10-11-12-13 sts until work measures 18.5-19-20.5-21-21.5 cm (71⁄4-71⁄2-8- 81⁄4-81⁄2 in) [40-44-48-42-54 rows] from the start of the neck, cast off all the sts.

 

ARMHOLE, STRAPS & NECK BORDER:
CO 252-267-286-301-316 sts.
Work 3 rows in G.st, leave sts on a spare needle.

 

TO MAKE UP:
On the front graft the border sts around the armholes, straps and neck.
Sew the side seams of the tunic.
To hold the top of the Back, slip the elastic through the border on the WS of work.
Sew on the press studs: see diagram for placement. Secure and weave in all ends.
