STITCHES USED
2/2 RIB, using 5.0 mm needles. 
BROKEN RIB THROUGH BACK LOOP (Broken rib tbl), using 5.0mm and 5.50mm needles. Worked on an uneven number of sts. 
Row 1 (RS): p1, * k1 tbl, p1 *, rep from * to *.

Row 2: k.
Rep those 2 rows.

CABLE A, using 5.5 mm needles. Worked on 19 sts.
Row 1 (RS): p3, k6, p1, k6, p3. 
Row 2 and all even rows: k3, p6, k1, p6, k3. 
Row 3: p3, 6CR, p1, 6CL, p3.

Row 5 and 7: p3, k6, p1, k6, p3.
After row 8, rep from row 3.

To achieve a good result, it is essential to make a tension square (see BASIC knitting instruction pages at beginning of book).
16 sts and 22 rows in Broken rib tbl with 5.5 mm needles = 10 cm (4 in) square

 

 

 

 

 

TO MAKE

 

BACK:
Using 5.0 mm needles, cast on 74-78-86-90-98 sts.
Work even in 2/2 Rib for 7 cm (23⁄4 in) [20 rows], but work as foll on last row:
S and L: inc 1 st (= 75-87 sts).
M, XL and XXL: inc 3 sts evenly spaced (= 81-93- 101 sts).
Change to Broken rib tbl with 5.5 mm needles and work even until back measures 41-42-43-43-44 cm (16-161⁄2-17-17-171⁄2 in) [96-98-100-100-102 rows] total.

 

Raglan:
Cast off 2-2-2-2-4 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows. Dec at each end as foll, 1 st in from edge:
S: starting on 3rd row then every 4th row 1 st 3 times; every 2nd row 1 st 18 times.
M: starting on 3rd row then every 4th row 1 st twice; every 2nd row 1 st 21 times.
L: starting on 1st row then every 2nd row 1 st 26 times.
XL: starting on 1st row then every 2nd row 1 st 28 times.
XXL: starting on 1st row then every 2nd row 1 st 29 times.
To dec 1 st, 1 st in from edge: p1, p2 tog, cont row until 3 sts rem on left hand needle, p2 tog, p1.
Once you have worked the last dec, work even for 1 row on the rem 29-31-31-33-35 sts and cast off all sts for neck.

 

 

 

FRONT:
Using 5.0 mm needles, cast on 74-78-86-90- 98sts.
Work even in 2/2 Rib for 7 cm (23⁄4 in) [20 rows], but for sizes M, XL and XXL inc 2 sts evenly spaced on the last row (= 74-80-86-92-100 sts).
Change to 5.5 mm needles and work: 12-15-18-21-25 sts in Broken rib tbl working:
S and L: as explanation,
M - XL and XXL: from * to * of explanation,
19 sts Cable A and inc 5 sts evenly spaced across 1st row (see placement on chart),
33 sts Cable B and inc 11 sts evenly spaced across 1st row (see placement on chart),
19 sts Cable A and inc 5 sts evenly spaced across 1st row (see placement on chart),
12-15-18-21-25 sts in Broken rib tbl starting for all sizes with k1 tbl (= 95-101-107-113-121 sts).
Work as set until piece measures 41-42-43-43- 44 cm (16-161⁄2-17-17-171⁄2 in) [96-98-100-100- 102 rows] total.

 

Raglan and neck:
For raglan, cast off 2-2-2-2-4 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows.

S: 1 st 4 times every 14th row, 1 st twice every 12th row.
M: 1 st 5 times every 12th row, 1 st twice every 10th row.
L: 1 st 6 times every 10th row, 1 st 3 times every 8th row.
XL: 1 st twice every 10th row, 1 st 8 times every 8th row.
XXL: 1 st 7 times every 8th row, 1 st 5 times every 6th row.

RIGHT SLEEVE:
Work as for left sleeve rev shaping.

 

 

 

COLLAR:
Using 5.0 mm needles, cast on 107-109-111-115- 119 sts. Work in Broken rib tbl for 16 cm (61⁄4 in) and leave all sts on hold.

 


FINISHING:

Join raglans.
Graft collar to neck edge (see Grafting a border instructions) so as to overlap 6 cm (21⁄4 in) of left edge over right edge (see red line on diagram).
At top of collar, fold over 2 cm (3⁄4 in) to WS and stitch hem in place.
Using 3 strands of yarn, make a twisted cord of 110 cm (43 in). Thread it through hem.
Sew sleeve seams and sides of sweater. Secure and weave in ends.
