STITCHES USED
2/2 RIB, using 5.0 mm needles.
FAIR ISLE, using 5.5 mm needles. Follow Chart for size being made. The smaller sections are embroidered on later using Embroidered Pattern technique (see ‘Knitting: Stitches/Techniques/Tips’).

TENSION/GAUGE
To achieve a good result it is essential to make a tension square (see “Check Your Tension” instructions at beginning of book). 18 sts & 18 rows over Fair Isle using 5.5 mm needles = 10 cm (4 in) square.

TO MAKE

BACK:
Using 5.0 mm needles & col B CO 90-94-102- 110-122 sts.
Row 1 (RS): *k2, p2* rep from *to* ending with k2. Row 2: *p2, k2* rep from *to* ending with p2. 
These 2 rows form 2/2 rib, cont as est until work measures 5 cm (2 in) [12 rows] total, but on the final row for sizes S & XXL dec 1 st, for sizes M, L & XL inc 1 st. 
Change to 5.5 mm needles & cont in Fair Isle, following Chart for size being made, on the 89- 95-103-111-121 sts obtained until work measures 55-56-56-57-58 cm (213⁄4-22-22-221⁄2-223⁄4 in) [102-104-104-106-108 rows] total.

 

Armholes:
Slip a stitch marker into the first & last stitch to mark the beg of the armholes (see diagram & Chart), then cont in Fair Isle until work measures 72-74-76-78-80 cm (281⁄4-29-30-303⁄4-311⁄2 in) [132-136-140-144-148 rows] total.

 

Shoulders & Neck:
Next row (RS): Cast off 10-10-11-12-14 sts, work 22-24-26-28-30 sts, cast off the central 25-27- 29-31-33 sts for neck, work to end.
Next row (WS): Cast off 10-10-11-12-14 sts, work to central cast off sts, put rem sts on a spare needle, work will now be completed in 2 sections.
*Next row (neck edge): Cast off 2 sts, work to end.
Cont to cast off at shoulder edge on every alt row as foll: 10-11-12-13-14 sts twice.* With WS facing pick up sts left on stitch holder & work from *to*.

 

 

 

LEFT FRONT:
Using 5.0 mm needles & col B CO 39-43-47-51- 55sts.

SLEEVES:
Using 5.0 mm needles & col B CO 42-42-46-46- 50sts.
Work in 2/2 rib as for Back until work measures 5 cm (2 in) [12 rows] total, but on the final row for sizes S, L & XXL dec 1 st, for sizes M & XL inc 1 st.
Change to 5.5 mm needles & cont in Fair Isle, foll Chart for size being made, on the 41-43-45-47-49 sts obtained, but on the first RS row inc 1 st at each edge of row, 1 st in from edge.
Rep this inc on every foll 8th-8th-6th-6th-6th row 4-1-9-7-5 times, then on every foll 6th-6th- 4th-4th-4th 6-10-4-7-10 times.
Cont on the 63-67-73-77-81 sts obtained until work measures 52 cm (201⁄2 in) [96 rows] total.

 

Top of sleeve:
Leave sts on a spare needle.

 

 

 

FRONT BORDERS (2):
Using 5.0 mm needles & col B CO 110-114-118- 122-126 sts. Work in 2/2 rib for 11 rows then leave on a spare needle.

 

 

 

COLLAR:
Using 5.0 mm needles & col B CO 98-102-106- 110-114 sts. Work in 2/2 rib for 11 rows then leave on a spare needle.

 

 

 

FINISHING:
Join shoulder seams.
Using back stitch graft a border along each front (see ‘Knitting: Stitches/Techniques/Tips’), then graft the collar around the neck edge from one edge of the border to the other.
Graft the top of the sleeves into the armholes between the stitch markers.
Sew sleeve & side seams.
On the right front 2.5 cm (1 in) from the edge make 6 buttonholes without cutting thread (see ‘Knitting: Stitches/Techniques/Tips’), the first 2.5 cm (1 in) from the cast on edge, the 2nd 2.5 cm (1 in) from the top of the collar, the others at regular spacings.
Sew on buttons.
Secure & weave in all ends.
