These Christmas stockings are a beautiful decoration on their own, but even nicer when stuffed with gifts.  Make one for every member of your family and leave them plain, or embellish them with an embroidered initial.

Here’s our instructions on how to knit them:

Measurements

Length (approx, from folded cuff to heel) cm 38

Foot length (approx) cm 24

Yarn required

Lincraft Cosy Wool 8ply, 100g balls

Superwash 8ply or DK 8ply 2

Needles

A set of 4.00mm double-pointed knitting needles.

Wool needle for grafting and sewing in ends.

Tension

22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm over stocking st, using 4.00mm needles.

Requirements

A cable needle.

Special Abbreviation

C12B = slip next 6 sts onto cable needle and leave at back of work, K6, then K6 from cable needle.

Cabled Christmas Stocking

Using set of 4.00mm double-pointed needles, cast on 62 sts on 3 needles.

1st round: * K1, P1, rep from * to end. Rep 1st round until work measures 14cm from beg.

Next round: K11, P1, inc knitways in next 7 sts, P1, K22, P1, inc knitways in next 7 sts, P1, K11 … 76 sts.

Beg Cable Patt:

1st round: K11, P2, K12, P2, K22, P2, K12, P2, K11.

2nd round: As 1st round.

3rd round: K11, P2, C12B, P2, K22, P2, C12B, P2, K11. Rep 1st round 9 times.

Last 12 rounds form cable patt. Cont in cable patt until work measures approx 45cm from beg, ending with a 7th patt round.

Next round: K11, P1, [K2tog] 7 times, P1, K22, P1, [K2tog] 7 times, P1, K11 … 62 sts.

Divide For Heel:

Knit first 16 sts of round on to one needle, slip last 16 sts of round on to other end of same needle [these 32 sts are for heel]. Leave rem 30 sts for instep on one needle. Work 11 rows stocking st on heel sts, always slipping first st purlways on a purl row and knitways on a knit row.

Turn Heel:

1st row: Sl 1, K19, K2tog, K1, turn.

2nd row: Sl 1, P9, P2tog tbl, P1, turn.

3rd row: Sl 1, K10, K2tog, K1, turn.

4th row: Sl 1, P11, P2tog tbl, P1, turn.

5th row: Sl 1, K12, K2tog, K1, turn.

6th row: Sl 1, P13, P2tog tbl, P1, turn.

7th row: Sl 1, K14, K2tog, K1, turn.

8th row: Sl 1, P15, P2tog tbl, P1, turn.

9th row: Sl 1, K16, K2tog, K1, turn.

10th row: Sl 1, P17, P2tog tbl, P1, turn.

11th row: Sl 1, K20.

12th row: Sl 1, P21.

13th row: K11.

Using 1st needle: Knit rem 11 sts of heel, then knit up 11 sts along side of heel; using 2nd needle, knit across 30 instep sts; using 3rd needle, knit up 11 sts along other side of heel, then knit rem 11 heel sts … 74 sts.

Dec For Instep:

1st round: Knit.

2nd round: 1st needle, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1; 2nd needle, knit; 3rd needle, K1, sl 1, K1, psso, knit to end … 72 sts. Rep last 2 rounds until 64 sts rem. Cont without further dec until work measures 15cm from side of heel where sts were knitted up.

Shape Toe:

1st round: 1st needle, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1; 2nd needle, K1, sl 1, K1, psso, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1; 3rd needle, K1, sl 1, K1, psso, knit to end.

2nd round: Knit.

Rep 1st and 2nd rounds until 40 sts rem. Knit 1 round, then 1st needle of next round. Divide sts evenly between 2 needles and graft sts tog.

I-Cord

Using two double-pointed 4.00mm needles, cast on 3 sts.

1st row: Knit. ** Do not turn. Slide sts to other end of needle and K3. Rep from ** until work measures 50cm (or length desired). Cast off.

Finishing

Fold rib cuff in half. Make a 16cm loop (or length desired) in the centre of the I-Cord and attach loop securely to outside edge of rib cuff. Sew in all ends.
