This crafty project was done by our guest blogger Carinas Crafts!
This quick and easy mug rug uses a tying technique to fasten the 3 layers together.
Enjoy a cuppa and a book once you’re finished!
Finished size: approx. 30.5 cm x 30.5 cm [12 in x 12 in]
Faces Fabric – 30.5 cm x 30.5 cm [12 in x 12 in] [photo supplies]
Backing Fabric – Colour of choice – Ivory – 34.5 cm x 34.5cm [13 ½ in x 13 ½ in]
Wadding – 30.5 cm x 30.5 cm [12 in x 12 in]
Polyester Thread – Ivory
– Cut all pieces as listed above.
– Lay as shown. Backing fabric right side down, wadding and face fabric uppermost, right side up.
The backing fabric is folded to create the binding. You will have 2 cm [3/4 in] on each side to create the binding.
Fold corner of backing fabric inwards – it should lie between backing fabric and wadding.
Working one side at a time, fold outer edge to meet edge of face fabric.
Then fold again over face fabric to create the binding.
Repeat on all four sides. Carefully fold so that 4 mitred corners are formed. Pin in place.
Mark the face fabric every 2 cm [3/4 in] with a dot using a dressmaker’s pencil.
Start quilting the mug rug by tying all three layers using the crochet cotton thread.
Thread your needle with the crochet cotton thread without knotting. Sewing from the front to back at each marked dot, tie a knot to secure 3 times.
Continue and tie at each market dot.
Bind the quilt together sewing the backing fabric to the face fabric. Ensure stitches are not visible.
Your mug rug is ready to enjoy – front and back.
