When it comes to choosing accessories sometimes it is just too hard to find the right piece to match your outfit! We have the perfect solution- make it yourself! This step by step guide on how to make your very own DIY Wooden Bead Necklace allows you to make the necklace of your very own design. Better yet this project is child friendly so the little ones can get involved too!
- 1 pack of Kids wooden beads
- Acrylic paint in your choice of colours (we used blue, green and gold & mixed white to lighten the green & blue)
- A paintbrush (or one for each colour)
- Some pencils (to hold the beads while you are painting them)
- A mug or jar to hold the pencils while the beads are drying.
- Cord to thread the beads on
- A dish to hold the paint
Push the end of a bead onto a pencil to hold it while you paint.
Load a brush with paint, and holding the brush still, rotate the bead on the pencil against the brush to keep a steady line as you paint. I found this easiest by resting my forearms on a table, and just moving my hands. This is a great project for kids because they can reach all angles of the beads without getting too messy.
When finished, stand the pencil in a mug and wait for the bead to dry. In the meantime, you can paint other beads with different colours.
Layer another colour over the top of a section of the bead to create stripes. Try painting vertical stripes, or even going over the top of your paint with a permanant marker to make spots or draw pictures.
Thread the beads onto a piece of cord & tie a knot.
To make an adjustable length necklace with a sliding knot
Make sure your cord is longer than you need so you can trim off the ends we will be working one knot at a time:
Lay the end of the cord over the other cord and bend it back on itself so you have a sideways U shape.
Bring the end under both piece of cord and pinch that bundle loosely between your fingers.
Wind the end around the entire bundle twice.
Push the very end through the open loop and pull the knot tight. You now have a sliding knot.
Repeat for the other side and trim off the ends.
And now you have your very own DIY Wooden Bead Necklace. Experiment using different colour combinations- metallics always add a nice touch or you can incorporate glitter onto some beads for a sparkly addition!
