Gingham fabric – we used blue and white Ric Rac 65cm – matching/ complimentary to fabric colour we used blue Sullivans crochet cotton – satin 2ply – blue Matching thread – we used white Needle Rotary cutter Cutting mat Scissors Safety pin Knitting needle

Step 1: Cut 1 panels 60cm x 40cm.

Step 2: Cut 1 strip 5cm x 112cm.

Step 3: Sew the Ric Rac with crochet cotton. Use the lines and squares to sew neatly. We sewed between 2 coloured rows and used the white squares to make small stitches. Sew the Ric Rac approximately 5cm from bottom of bag and along the 60cm length.

Step 4: Add further stitches if desired. We added 2 rows of cross stitch above and below the Ric Rac. Making the stitch in the white space working the bottom stitch from left to right working on the diagonal on the white [in at the top left of coloured square, out bottom right of coloured square].

Step 5: Then working the top stitches, working right to left, complete each cross stitch [in at top right of the coloured square and out bottom left of coloured square].

Step 6: Sew a 0.5cm seam along the 60cm length [opposite to Ric Rac and cross stitch].

Step 7: Fold strip in half lengthways and sew a 0.5cm seam at one end and along one length. Leave open at one end to turn right side out.

Step 8: Fold bag in half – right sides together. Sew a 1cm seam at the bottom and side of bag. Sew side seam stopping 5cm from top of bag.

Step 9: Fold top over [opening of bag] approximately 2.5cm [wrong sides together]. Sew just above the seam previously made. Sew near fold as well. The space between the 2 seams will be the space strip is passed through.

Step 10: Turn strip right side out – we used a knitting needle to help pull through. Use the knitting needle to push out corners and press. Sew open end closed. Sew 2 seams to reinforce strip.

Step 11: Use a safety pin as an aide to guide the strip through from one opening out through the other. Knot the 2 ends of the strip together. Press bag.
