Sizes: XXS (XS,S,M,L). Brim circumference 36 (40,46,51,56) cm. Tension: 17 sts x 24 rows over 10cm x 10cm Using 4.5mm double pointed needles cast on 56 (64,72,80,88) sts. Spread the stitches evenly across 3 dp needles. 1st rnd: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd. Using a stitch marker or safety pin tomark the first stitch helps keep track of where the rnd begins. 2nd rnd: *P1, k1; rep from * to end of rnd Rep. Last 2 rnds until work measures 2.5 (3,3,3,4) cm from beg. Change to 5.5mm dp needles. Knit every stitch in every round until work measures 10 (11,13,14,15) cm from beg. Shaping the Crown 1st rnd: *K5(6,7,8,9) k2tog; rep from * to end. 2nd rnd: Knit 3rd rnd: *K4(5,6,7,8) k2tog; rep from * to end. 4th rnd: Knit 5th rnd: *K3(4,5,6,7) k2tog; rep from * to end. 6th rnd: *K2(3,4,5,6) k2tog; rep from * to end. 7th rnd: Knit 8th rnd: *K1(2,3,4,5) k2tog; rep from * to end. Continue dec in this fashion up to and including the last rnd k2tog to end of rnd. Creating the knitted cord stem Transfer rem sts to one 4.5mm dp needle. 1st rnd: Knit across the sts to the end. Do not turn your work. 2nd rnd: Keeping the right side facing, push the stitches back to the other end of the dp needle so you're ready to knit a right side row again. Insert the second dp needle into the first stitch to knit as usual, pulling the working yarn firmly to knit across to the end. Repeat rnds 1 and 2 until the cord is 2 (2,3,4,4.5) cm. Cast off. Earflaps: Decide which part of the hat will be the back. From the centre of the back of the hat measure 4 (5,6,6,7) cm along brim to the left of the centre point and mark with a safety pin. Place a 2nd pin another 8 (10,10,10,13) cm along from the first pin. With the hat upside down and right side facing, use 4.5mm needles to pick up 12 (16,16,16,20) sts along the cast on edge between the safety pins. Turn 1st row: Knit this first wrong side row. 2nd row: (RS) Beg moss stitch pattern. *K1,p1; rep from * to end of row. 3rd row: (WS) * P1, k1; rep from * to end of row. 4th row: P2tog, *k1, p1; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2tog 5th row: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of row. 6th row: K2tog, *p1, k1; rep from * to last 2 st, p2tog. 7th row: *P1, k1; rep from * to end of row. Repeat rows 4-7 until 4st rem. Do not turn. Knitted Cord 1st rnd: Slide sts to other end of needle. K4. Do not turn. 2nd rnd: Slide the stitches back to the other end of the dp needle. K4. Do not turn. Repeat rnds 1 and 2 until the cord is 12 (12,15,18,18) cm. Knitted Ball End: Slide sts to other end of needle, still with RS facing. 1st rnd: Knit into the front and back of each st to end (8 sts). Divide sts among 3 dp needles. 2nd rnd: (WS) Purl into the back and front of every st. (16 sts) 3rd, 4th & 5th rnds: (WS) Purl. 6th rnd: (WS)*P1, p in back and front of front of next st; rep from * until end of rnd (24sts) 7th rnd: (WS) Purl. (WS) Purl every rnd without increasing until ball measures 5cm from beg. Next rnd: (WS) *P2tog; rep from * to end of rnd (12 sts). Stuff and shape the ball with polyester softfill. Next rnd: (WS) *P2tog; rep from * to end (6 sts). Do not cast off. Break off yarn leaving a 20cm tail. With a yarn needle thread the tail through the rem 6sts and pull tight. Fasten off. Repeat Earflap, Knitted Cord and Knitted Ball End to the right of the centre of the back of the hat to complete 2nd earflap. Sew in ends.
