P1 68 sts. 2nd row&all even (WS) rows: Continue the pattern, k the k sts and p the p sts as they face you. 3rd row: (RS) P1 * K1, p2tog, p6, p2tog. Repeat from * 5 more times. P1 56 sts. 5th row: (RS) P1 * K1, p2tog, p4, p2tog. Repeat from * 5 more times. P1 44 sts. 7th row: (RS) P1 * K1, p2tog, p2, p2tog. Repeat from * 5 more times. Break off yarn leaving a long end. Using a wool needle draw yarn end through all 14 sts on the needle. Pull up tightly and sure. Sew up the seam with remaining tail. Finishing the hat rim: With the crochet hook, work 2 rounds of dc evenly around rim, finishing with a slip st into the first dc of the second round. Fasten off. Sew in ends. Visor: Worked sideways. Cast on 3 sts. 1st row: (WS) P1, m1k, p1, m1k, p1. 5 sts 2nd row: (RS) K1, p1, k1 ,p1, k1 3rd row: P1, k1, m1k, p1, m1k, k1, p1 7 sts 4th row: K1, p2, k1, p2, k1 Continue in this pattern inc 1 st before and after centre p st every WS row, making increases in p, 5 times more, until 17 sts are on the needle. Work even in established pat without inc until piece measures 15cm from beg, end on RS. Next row: (WS) P1, k5, k2tog, p1, k2tog, k5, p1 15sts. Next row&all RS rows: K the k sts and p the p sts as they face you. Continue in this manner dec 1 st before and after every centre knit st every WS row 6 times more, ending on RS 3 sts. Cast off. Sew in loose ends. Front band: Cast on 5 sts knit in stocking stitch (1 row knit, 1 row purl) until piece measures 22cm or length that fits easily across the front of the visor. Cast off. Making up: Fold the visor piece in half along the centre knit stitch. This knit st edge forms the curve of the visor, the other edge is the straight edge. Remember the purl side is the right side. Find the centre of the straight edge and match and pin this to the centre front knit stitch of the hat. Using the crochet hook use dc to join the visor to the hat by inserting the hook through the crocheted rim of the hat, then through the two layers of the visor to begin each dc. Dc across the straight edge until visor is fully joined with the hat. Fasten off. Sew in ends. Sew the band across the front of the visor and attach with the two buttons.
