55cm denim (Cut into 2 pieces 48cm x 55cm) 33cm red homespun fabric 33cm heavyweight calico 1m of vlisofix. Vlisofix is sold by the metre. It is a great tool for applique because you can trace your design on the paper side, iron it on to the fabric, and peel it off to reveal another side that can be ironed on to the next surface. Chair pad cushion insert Sewing machine Sharp scissors 3 buttons Ironing board & iron Red, cream & navy blue threads 2 metres of grosgrain ribbon (optional) for fixing cushion to chair or use scraps of denim (see step 2 of 'to make cushion')

A great project to revitalise your old chair pads, or cover some new ones! This project will fit a new chair pad measuring 40cm x 40cm. Photocopy the cross templates below to fill an A3 sized sheet of paper and trace them on the Vlisofix. Trace both large crosses first (A & B) as they will go on top, then trace the lower calico cross (C), and the lower insert cross (D). Step 1 Cut out the Vlisofox shapes and lay the Vlisofix on to the fabric (A & C on the calico), (B & D on the red). Iron them in place, and cut out your fabric, peeling off the paper once the fabric is cool on the red pieces only. Step 2 Cut out the pieces. You will be building the cross in 2 sections. Take piece C and lay it flat, lay the red D piece in place (refer to the template for placement). Note that on the left side, the arms of the cross are slightly more to the bottom than the top, and on the right side, the arms are slightly more to the top than the bottom. Iron the red pieces in place. Repeat this with pieces A & B being careful to centre the cross. Then remove the paper on the calico pieces. Step 3 Using red thread on your sewing machine, applique around the red fabric on both crosses. Step 4 Lay a denim piece flat on your ironing board with the longest side perpendicular (we need the length for the opening at the back of the chair. Centre both crosses in place and when you are happy with the placement (approx 10cm from the bottom edge), iron in place. Thread the sewing machine with cream thread, and applique both crosses in place starting with the lower layer, and finishing with the upper layer. To make cushion Lay both pieces of denim right side together, and thread your sewing machine with navy thread. Sew around both long sides and one short edge, leaving the other short edge for the back opening. Tuck the back edge in 6cm, and sew 3 buttonholes to allow you to remove the cushion for cleaning if required. Sew buttons in place. Step 2 Cut 4 long strips 48cm x 3cm of denim (if not using ribbon), and fold them over 3 times lengthways, pinning in place. Sew a zig zag stitch along the entire length, and pull off any loose denim threads that remain to give a lightly frayed look.
